What is fair trade coffee?

Fair trade coffee – we’ve all heard about it, but what does this term actually mean? While it’s a popular buzzword in the coffee industry, many people don’t understand what exactly sets this coffee apart from the rest.

What is fair trade coffee?

Put simply, fair trade coffee means that an organization has screened the beans throughout production to ensure sustainability and labor standards. This makes it sound like a simple process, but it’s actually far from it. In order to get certification, coffee companies must undergo a thorough screening across the entire supply chain. This auditing process takes note of many things – sustainable farming practices, labor conditions, and trade prices, to name just a few. This is all done to ensure the long-term viability of the farms, on an ecological level and for its growers.

Why is it important to buy?

It’s hard to believe that a single purchase can make a difference, but you’d be surprised. While the logo may be small, its impact is massive. With each fair trade coffee purchase, you support an industry that has made great strides in sustainability but which also has a long ways to go. Often times, coffee growers still aren’t paid a living wage for their labor and often struggle to obtain education about sustainable farming techniques. With help from organizations like Pure Origin, these growers receive a higher price for each sale and are also given increased access to training. This is an immediate boost to their quality of life, as well as their farming techniques.

That’s why it’s essential to support fair trade coffee organizations. Each sale makes a huge difference for growers, as well as our planet. And when it’s as easy as just paying attention to which brands you buy from, it’s a no-brainer. So, next time you’re shopping for coffee, do your research. It’s a simple choice with a big impact.

The Pure Origin difference

Pure Origin is proud to boast three organic, fair-trade labeled coffees: our Indonesian dark roast with chocolate notes, Peruvian light roast with nutty notes and our Congo dark roast with citrus notes. That way, regardless of your flavor preference, you’ll always be able to enjoy a delicious, fair trade coffee. Additionally, all of our coffees are sustainably produced and single origin beans. This means that even the ones that aren’t fair-trade certified are produced under sustainable and ethical conditions as well – just without the logo label!
