What is fair trade coffee?

Fair trade coffee – we’ve all heard about it, but what does this term actually mean? While it’s a popular buzzword in the coffee industry, many people don’t understand what exactly sets this coffee apart from the rest.

What is fair trade coffee?

Put simply, fair trade coffee means that an organization has screened the beans throughout production to ensure sustainability and labor standards. This makes it sound like a simple process, but it’s actually far from it. In order to get certification, coffee companies must undergo a thorough screening across the entire supply chain. This auditing process takes note of many things – sustainable farming practices, labor conditions, and trade prices, to name just a few. This is all done to ensure the long-term viability of the farms, on an ecological level and for its growers.

Why is it important to buy?

It’s hard to believe that a single purchase can make a difference, but you’d be surprised. While the logo may be small, its impact is massive. With each fair trade coffee purchase, you support an industry that has made great strides in sustainability but which also has a long ways to go. Often times, coffee growers still aren’t paid a living wage for their labor and often struggle to obtain education about sustainable farming techniques. With help from organizations like Pure Origin, these growers receive a higher price for each sale and are also given increased access to training. This is an immediate boost to their quality of life, as well as their farming techniques.

That’s why it’s essential to support fair trade coffee organizations. Each sale makes a huge difference for growers, as well as our planet. And when it’s as easy as just paying attention to which brands you buy from, it’s a no-brainer. So, next time you’re shopping for coffee, do your research. It’s a simple choice with a big impact.

The Pure Origin difference

Pure Origin is proud to boast three organic, fair-trade labeled coffees: our Indonesian dark roast with chocolate notes, Peruvian light roast with nutty notes and our Congo dark roast with citrus notes. That way, regardless of your flavor preference, you’ll always be able to enjoy a delicious, fair trade coffee. Additionally, all of our coffees are sustainably produced and single origin beans. This means that even the ones that aren’t fair-trade certified are produced under sustainable and ethical conditions as well – just without the logo label!

At Pure Origin, we’re all about giving back to our growers and our planet. But we can’t make a difference without your help. We hope you’ll consider Pure Origin next time you’re looking for a delicious cup of coffee that you can feel good about drinking.

How does Pure Origin support education empowerment?

In a crowded coffee market, it’s essential to be well-trained in sustainable cultivation. But in Indonesia, it’s often difficult to access quality education and the technology that facilitates it. That’s why Pure Origin is proud to work alongside KSU. Item Reje Gayo, a group formed to assist Sumatran coffee farmers. With every sale of our organic Indonesian dark roast, we’re able to support education empowerment – and help over 1,400 local growers.

KSU. Item Reje Gayo

KSU. Item Reje Gayo makes a huge impact on the coffee trade in Indonesia, covering over 1,073 hectares of land. The group teaches its members about cultivation techniques and harvesting methods, but that’s not all they do. They also provide access to production tools, field counseling, visits to educational sights, and more. In doing so, they give the growers the tools they need to be sustainable and take care of their families. The impact of this can’t be understated, as many people in the Indonesian coffee trade have traditionally struggled to earn a living wage in a market dominated by larger farms.

KSU. Item Reje Gayo has made massive strides in recent years, but that doesn’t mean its work is over. With your support, we can help fund financial assistance for the cooperative, as well as crop rehabilitation through fair wages. Additionally, funding will help them continue their efforts to spread the principles of sustainable farming – which makes all the difference for the planet.

The importance of education empowerment

At Pure Origin, we believe that nothing is more important than giving back to the world. Pair that with a great cup of coffee, and that’s a perfect match. By working alongside KSU. Item Reje Gayo, we’ve helped thousands of farmers, but we can’t do it without you.

So next time you’re in the mood for a tasty dark roast, we hope you’ll consider Pure Origin for your much-needed caffeine fix. Together, we’ll continue improving the lives of growers throughout Indonesia – and across the world.

Thank you for empowering growers at origin! With every story read, cup poured, and coffee sipped – you’re connecting with the world.

How does Pure Origin support small business empowerment?

As the largest coffee producer in Central America, Honduras produces thousands of pounds of beans each year. As a result, you might think that corporations dominate the Honduran market, but that’s not the case. In fact, 90% of Honduran coffee farms operate as small, family-owned lots – meaning they’re quite vulnerable in a volatile market. Even a single poor season can ruin a once-thriving farm. That’s why Pure Origin trades exclusively with small, independent farmers in Honduras, supporting small business empowerment in the process.

Family-owned Honduran farms

Honduran specialty coffee may be on the rise, but any number of factors can decimate the industry. Due to the small size of the farms, climate change, water shortage, and infectious disease can have a huge impact. Many of the farms operate on a year-by-year basis and can teeter on the edge of bankruptcy during slow seasons. In order to ensure the survival of these independent farms – and over 100,000 families that rely on the coffee trade – it’s critical to shop small.

You might not think that a single purchase can make a difference, but you’d be wrong. With each sale, Pure Origin is able to continue empowering our growers throughout Honduras, and every bit helps. In recent years, Honduran farmers have suffered from poverty and malnutrition, as well as environmental threats such as hurricanes, coffee rust, and invasive insects. Every purchase makes a huge difference for the growers of these micro lots, giving them the supplies and training they need to thrive. That’s why we hope you’ll consider our Honduran medium roast next time you have a caffeine craving.

The importance of small business empowerment

Pure Origin is proud to support our growers, but we can’t do it without you. Together, we’ll help fund a better quality of life for the growers who work hard to provide such delicious coffee. Additionally, your assistance helps us provide training in the field of sustainable farming – which can be the difference between success and failure on a small lot. And with every cup of coffee sold, we’re also giving back to the earth, ensuring that it – and our devoted growers – can continue giving us the coffee we love.

Thank you for empowering growers at origin! With every story read, cup poured, and coffee sipped – you’re connecting with the world.

How does Pure Origin support peace empowerment?

Did you know that there are over 15,000 coffee farmers in the Democratic Republic of Congo? These farmers have one thing in common – like many people in the Congo, they’ve suffered from the conflict, poverty, and injustice that was once a daily part of life. As they attempt to rebuild their lives and move forward, the coffee trade has been a beacon of hope, and Pure Origin is proud to help support them. We know that Africa isn’t the first place people think of when they talk about coffee. We want to change that with a delicious dark roast and an important cause – peace empowerment.

Mighty Peace Coffee

In the Congo, we work alongside Mighty Peace Coffee, a social impact importer that is ethical and sustainable. Since its foundation, the group has supported over 9,000 men and women in post-conflict zones. Much of the funding goes towards providing education for the growers – both in agriculture and financial literacy. It helps pays their debts, improve their living conditions, and gives them the tools they need to continue farming. Furthermore, Mighty Peace sets aside money for apprenticeship trades, conservation of protected forest areas, and keeping the peace in the formerly war-torn country. Additionally, we’re excited to report that over 1,500 people in the Congo will receive clean water and energy this year. With your help, we hope to boost that number in the near future.

Most of the coffee that they produce is certified organic and fair trade – and that makes a huge difference for the farmers. In the Umoja region, 11,600 farmers work daily to bring us the delicious Congolese coffee beans. In the Twende region, 2,093 do the same. Thanks to their tireless efforts and support from Mighty Peace, we’re able to enjoy an incredible dark roast that rivals anything coming out of South America or the Caribbean.

The importance of peace empowerment

Nothing is more important to us than ensuring peaceful, sustainable living conditions for our growers. That’s the whole reason we started Pure Origin. We donate a portion of every sale of our Congolese coffee directly to Mighty Peace. That way, you never have to choose between morals and a delicious brew.

So next time you have a craving for a dark roast, we hope you’ll consider drinking Pure Origin. With your support, we’ll have a huge impact on the lives of our growers in the Congo region.

How does Pure Origin support women empowerment?

At Pure Origin, we’re all about giving back, and empowering women is one of our top priorities. That’s why we donate a portion of every sale of our Colombian roast to the Las Rosas Project – a group that helps support female farmers. Are you a passionate advocate for gender equality? Then look no further. Every cup sold benefits women empowerment in the rural areas of the South American country. Let’s explore how the Las Rosas Project is making a difference in Colombia and how your coffee purchases can help.

The Las Rosas Project

In Colombia, men dominate the coffee trade. The Las Rosas project in Huila, Colombia, has made it their mission to change this fact. By funding training, seminars, and other useful resources, the project has helped over 550 women become financially independent on their small, family-owned farms. The women (many victims of gender-based violence and inequality) are given all the resources they need to thrive and take control of their lives.

That’s why Pure Origin works with Las Rosas – we get the delicious coffee beans and the female farmers get much needed education. This helps them reduce their social vulnerability, gives them access to credit, and reduces instances of domestic violence.

On the other hand, Las Rosas also has a deep commitment to the environment. That’s why the group trains women in sustainable farming techniques, so the Earth can continue providing for years to come. Additionally, the group plants coffee trees – over 2,500 to date! The future of the Colombian coffee trade is brighter and more sustainable as a result.

The importance of women empowerment

Gender equality is a struggle throughout the world, and perhaps even more so in rural Colombia. Our female growers already have the passion for coffee, and your continued funding helps them improve their lives and overcome the obstacles put in their place by a male-dominated industry. Above all, it’s essential to ensure that these women get the resources they need so they can continue improving their quality of life.

At Pure Origin, we love a good brew in the morning as much as anyone. However, we’re even more passionate about making a difference. By uniting the two, we hope to empower our growers and people across the globe. With your help, cup by cup, we’ll give the women of Colombia everything they need to take of their family, their farms, and our Earth.

How does Pure Origin support health empowerment?

Passionate about providing health care for the people that need it most? Then our Kenyan coffee is perfect for you! Pure Origin‘s Kenyan light roast benefits Grounds for Health, a group that provides cervical cancer treatment and screening for women who would usually go without. With every purchase, you help reduce the incidences of cervical cancer, increase access to care, and maintain sustainability of the African coffee industry. Let’s delve into the specific ways that every cup of coffee supports health empowerment in Kenya.

Grounds for Health

Since its foundation, Grounds for Health has treated over 12,000 women and screened over 140,000, according to the organization’s website. These women typically come from the most remote regions of Africa, where health care is often inadequate and preventative care is nonexistent. By partnering with Grounds for Health, we help provide health facilities with cryotherapy and treatment devices, as well as necessary supplies. Together, we also spread word about screening and treatment possibilities, saving lives that would have otherwise been lost.

Many women that receive treatment from Grounds for Health work in the coffee industry. In the far-out coffee-producing regions of Kenya, it’s difficult to get access to screening, let alone treatment. That’s why we partner with Grounds for Health – every cup of coffee sold makes a huge difference for our growers.

With goals to eradicate incidences of cervical cancer, it’s critical to continue funding health care, particularly for the ones that can least afford it. With your help, Grounds for Health can continue their mission. As word spreads about their work, we can vastly reduce the negative effects of cervical cancer in Kenya – together.

The importance of health empowerment

It’s impossible to overstate the power of saving a life. When caught in its early stages, cervical cancer can be easily treated, greatly improving the life expectancy of the woman. But with such a complex issue, it can be hard to know how to help. That’s why Pure Origin makes it easy. Simply purchase our Kenyan light roast and you’ll be giving back to our growers in Kenya. In doing so, we’ll be sharing a cup of coffee that’s not only delicious, but saves lives.

How does Pure Origin support environmental empowerment?

If you consider yourself an eco-warrior, an environmentalist, or just an earth-conscious person, this is the coffee for you! Like all Pure Origin coffees, our Peruvian light roast empowers people across the world. In this case, it’s environmental empowerment. With every purchase, you help support our partner in Peru – Todos Al Agua – a group that helps to heal the country’s scarce and polluted waterways. But let’s explore all the ways that this coffee gives back to the world.

Todos Al Agua

Todos Al Agua operates out of the Amazonas region of Peru, which has struggled with poor water quality for decades. Water is often difficult to find, and when it is found, it’s often polluted or unsuitable for drinking. That takes a toll on agriculture, let alone a search for clean drinking water. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Todos Al Agua – to “turn the tide” and protect the vital water resources throughout the region.

We source our Peruvian beans from the farmers in the Amazonas, supporting them financially as they create a name for themselves in the competitive coffee industry. Additionally, a portion of every purchase goes towards funding workshops to share the results of conditions and combat climate change. With these much-needed funds, the growers can improve their knowledge of the industry and of eco-friendly cultivation techniques that help them create a more sustainable future.

Over the course of the last few years, these growers have taken great strides towards independence. Their wages have never been more fair, and the quality of the soil is on the rise. However, that doesn’t mean that they’re out of the woods. With your help, we’ll continue funding their work so they can care for their families, their farms, and the planet.

The importance of environmental empowerment

At Pure Origin, environmental empowerment is one of our founding principles. Nothing is more important than sustainability. That’s why all of our coffee – including our Peruvian variety – comes from small, single origin growers. This allows us to support the farmers that really need it and helps us create a product that makes a difference.

So if you’re a fan of light roasts with nutty notes, you won’t regret giving our Peruvian coffee a shot. You’ll love the smooth flavor, but more than that, you’ll love the way that it empowers our growers to create a more sustainable industry for clean water.

Best ways to support coffee farmers

In the third wave of coffee, customers are putting higher value on the social responsibility of their favorite caffeine fix. They are increasingly aware of coffee brands which take advantage of their position of power by paying their growers poorly and depleting the environment. At Pure Origin, we believe you should never have to choose between your values and a delicious cup of coffee. That is why we produce all of our coffee sustainably and buy it from growers at premium prices. If you stress about your social responsibility and the environmental impact of your coffee, look no further than Pure Origin! We are proud to support coffee farmers, so read on to see how you can help!

Best ways to support coffee farmers

Buying coffee is obviously something that benefits farmers; however, not all coffee companies pay farmers equally. Big brands, in particular, pay less to farmers throughout their vast sourcing areas. In order to avoid making the “wrong” purchase, or one that benefits the company and not the grower, there are a few terms with which you should be familiar: sustainable-impact coffee and single-origin coffee. These two terms are what makes Pure Origin different from traditional coffee companies. Let us help walk you through these terms and why they matter for coffee fans across the world.

Sustainable-impact coffee

One word to keep an eye on in the future is sustainable-impact coffee. This means coffee grown and produced with an eye on sustainability, both for the farmers and the environment. Companies produce every cup in a way that supports the growers while also giving back to the earth. Sustainable-impact coffee brands often provide the farmers with education in proper techniques for cultivation, water conservation, and other ins and outs of the industry. As a result, farmers create a better cup of coffee and leave the land in better shape than before! In exchange for their hard labor, we pay them a premium for their beans. The cycle continues, with the farmer, the coffee brand, and the Earth itself benefitting from the increased commitment to sustainability.

No one should feel guilty about enjoying their morning cup of coffee! That is why Pure Origin is proud to be a leader in the field of sustainable-impact coffee! All of our growers and farmers receive premium prices for their hard work. Additionally, every variety of our coffee benefits a unique and important cause throughout the coffee-producing regions of the world. A portion of every sale goes towards one of these various causes. These include, among others, providing education and training to farmers in Indonesia, funding cervical cancer screening and treatment in remote regions of Kenya, and supporting small farmers as they attempt to make a name for themselves in the competitive coffee industry. When we source our coffee, we work hard to make sure it is created with sustainability, compassion, and equality!

Buy single-origin coffee

Single-origin coffee is coffee sourced from a single area, generally from one or more growers in a cooperative arrangement. This is opposed to larger-scale coffee operations, which source from vast areas of countries, mashing their beans into blends to disguise the fact that the beans could come from a dozen or more separate farms, with their conflicting flavors. With single-origin coffee companies, you can rest assured that you know the exact place your coffee comes from. Similarly, you can be sure of the conditions by which the beans were grown, harvested, and produced. This has benefits for consistency of flavor and for social accountability for the coffee company. Simply put, if you know exactly where your coffee comes from, you have more control .

Additionally, single-origin coffee companies generally operate on a smaller scale than larger brands. As such, they usually have a closer relationship with the growers. That means that the company is in a much better place to provide regional-specific assistance. In Peru, for example, Pure Origin partners with Todos Al Agua, a group fighting contaminated water in the region. In Colombia, we work with the Las Rosas Women’s Group as they empower women who want to start their own farms in the typically male-dominated coffee industry. With Pure Origin’s six coffee varieties supporting a range of causes, we are glad to be able to offer coffee that gives back to the world while we enjoy our favorite tasty brew!

Buy Pure Origin

Pure Origin is proudly both sustainable-impact and single-origin! This means we create every cup from a position of social and environmental responsibility. We take our commitment to the growers, our customers, and the Earth very seriously. Pure Origin grows, harvests, and processes every bean with care into the coffee that customers love from coast to coast! We make sure to support coffee farmers with a fair wage, ensuring delicious coffee for years to come! Buy Pure Origin coffee today and rest easy! Your purchase will make a difference for the planet and for people all over the world!

What projects are helped by Pure Origin coffee?

If you’ve heard about Pure Origin Coffee, you know that every cup of our coffee sold benefits causes across the world. Our six varieties, from our Congolese dark roast to our Peruvian light, support unique and important charitable causes. With so much to choose from, you may ask yourself, specifically, what projects are helped by Pure Origin coffee? Read on to learn everything you need to know about our charitable work and coffee, and how you can help!

What projects are helped by Pure Origin coffee?

We offer six coffees, all differing in flavor and roast, with each benefitting a different social activist cause in the respective regions: Congo, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Peru, and Colombia. These causes range from environmental activism to health awareness and screening to peace-keeping. That way, no matter what roast you prefer, you will always be able to improve the world with every cup!

Congo

Pure Origin’s Congolese coffee is an organic Fair-Trade-certified dark roast with citrus notes. It hails from the South Kivu region and benefits Mighty Peace Coffee, a group seeking to end mineral conflict. Brutality has torn the country apart, but alongside Mighty Peace, we have begun to make a difference. Proceeds help fund education, provide clothing, pay debts, and improve the living conditions of the Congolese people.

Honduras

Conversely, our Honduran coffee is a medium roast with caramel notes from the Intibucá region. Sales benefit various small family farms operating together as they attempt to make a name for themselves in the competitive coffee industry. 90 percent of Honduran coffee farms operate as small, family-owned lots. As a result, they are much more vulnerable to environmental concerns and financial instability. That is why proceeds from our coffee help farmers face environmental threats throughout the region. At the same time, they help strengthen the position of these small farmers in the coffee market.

Indonesia

Our Indonesian coffee is another organic, Fair-Trade dark roast, but this one has chocolate notes and comes from Sumatra. In Indonesia, we work with Coop Reje Gayo, a center that provides education and training on coffee-cultivation techniques. A portion of every sale helps fund this training and ensures that farmers can sell every bean for a premium. This is beneficial for the farmer, but also allows them to be sustainable growers, both environmentally and economically.

Kenya

Our Kenyan coffee is a tasty light roast with wine notes, coming from the Nyeri region. We partner there with Grounds for Health, a group aiming to reduce cervical cancer in remote regions of the coffee-producing country. Every cup sold goes towards reducing incidences of this horrible disease for women that disproportionately lack medical assistance. This includes increasing access to screening and prevention, as well as education and training of local health care providers.

Peru

Pure Origin’s Peruvian coffee is a light roast with nutty notes from the Amazonas region. Sales of this variety benefit Todos Al Agua, a group combatting contaminated water found throughout the region. Over the last 25 years, the Amazonas area has struggled with poor water quality, resulting in sickness and water scarcity. Alongside Todos Al Agua, we help fund ongoing workshops to share the results of conditions and combat climate change. This helps protect water resources that are vital for coffee growers and citizens, alike.

Colombia

Finally, our Colombian coffee is a medium roast with fruity notes, coming from the Huila region. There, we work with the Las Rosas Women’s Group, supporting 300 women as they grow coffee and attend workshops to better themselves and their crops. The project helps growers access necessary loans, provides equitable wages for their labor, and gives them technical training in their craft so they can lead their farm in the traditionally male-dominated coffee-growing industry.

Why Pure Origin?

Additionally, Pure Origin is proud to be a leader in the field of sustainable impact coffee. Sustainable impact means that we treat the environment and our farmers with respect. Our farms are all eco-friendly, and farmers receive training to avoid over-farming, pollution, and waste. That way, the planet can continue to thrive, all while we enjoy a delicious cup of coffee!

Similarly, every cup of Pure Origin coffee is single origin, meaning it comes from one grower or set of growers. As a result, you can be assured of exactly where your coffee comes from. That way, you can seek out specific flavors and characteristics. More importantly, when you know more about your coffee’s origin, you have more control over how it is produced. Having specific sources keeps us accountable to our farmers and gives us a closer relationship with them. We assist with situational challenges and pay premium prices for every bean.

Finally, all of our coffee benefits one of the causes detailed above, because we want sustainability to be more than a marketing tactic. We founded our company around these ideals, and will continue to help make the world a better place in the future. Try a cup of Pure Origin coffee today and help us make the next step together!
